Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:

The BAW was centered on inspiring the young brains and motivating the youths/secondary school students to pursue career in neuroscience. This was anchored by Youth Neuroscience Association lead by Mr. Smart Oparugo. Brain Bee Competition was organized among five secondary schools. About 61 students participated from 5 high schools and 25 were selected for the final Brain Bee Competition that took place in University of Port Harcourt Nigeria. The competitive quiz comprised of steeple chase, the written quiz and finally oral quiz for the selection of best three. Certificates of participation were given to all participants and Awards (cash and certificates) were also given to the best three candidates: first, second and third positions. There was also Brain Exhibition which was coordinated by Mr Ebube Williams and his team. . Different parts of the brain were taught to students and finally entertained with questions and answers.The Neuroscience for kids was held at Pre-josh International school, Alakahia Port Harcourt, Rivers state Nigeria where the kids were taught on Brain safety, different parts of the brain with Model brain exhibition, kids – on hands workshop include modelling of different parts of brain, brain caps and neurons using paper mache. Awards were issued to the best particpants. President of Youth Neuroscience association Samuel Gerorge (National Youth Service Corps) at Kaduna State University (KASU) in partnership with University of Port Harcourt Neuroscience group organized a Brain Awareness too with the theme ‘’Environmental stress and Mental health’’. Guest speakers were Dr Umar Mohammad, Medical Director and Dr D.S Amaza HOD Human Anatomy KASU.The activities were sponsored by Orish Chinna

How do you feel BAW participation benefited your organization and the local community?

Brain bee competition was quite educative and informative to high school students and undergraduate students. Many had indicated interest to pursue career in neuroscience and many had also joined our Youth neuroscience association and school authorities requested for more of the program. The neuroscience for kids was an exciting, informative, educative and a source of creativity to the kids, the school management was grateful and requested for more visit to educative the kids.
